THE STOP ONLINE PIRACY ACT
—————————————————————————————————————–
–Introduction–
Everyone’s heard of it, I’m sure. If you looked at Wikipedia yesterday, you’ll have had noticed that you weren’t able to view it due to a banner showing up saying something about S.O.P.A. Sites everywhere including Wikipedia, Firefox, Techdirt, Tumblr, and Google have been doing the same thing and have joined in a strike to destroy S.O.P.A. Just perform a Google search, ‘SOPA’ and you’ll see hundreds of results coming from protests about the bill.
For those who don’t know about this bill, what’s the big deal about it anyway? Why are so many people hating it? And it’s a US law, so why are so many countries joining?
——————————————————————————————————————–
What Exactly is SOPA?
Basically, if SOPA is passed, the result is this:
The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who makes the request, the court order could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators from conducting business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providersto block access to such sites. The bill would criminalize unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for ten such infringements within six months. The bill also grants immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.
Meaning anything, as in ANYTHING you do or post in a site such as Facebook, YouTube, a blog, or Twitter, if found guilty of containing copyrighted material will be taken down. For example, if I post an edited image containing Pikachu from the Pokémon series on Facebook, and certain ‘internet police’ from Nintendo find it, they will take down the image and possibly suspend my account (if they see more). Same applies to walkthroughs and game reviews I post here and in YouTube. The instant the ‘police’ find my videos or posts, it is immediately taken down, along with my account or the blog as well.
This is a stupid way to prevent piracy. I like the idea and concept behind this, but if this bill were to be passed, then the world wide web will no longer be known as the free and open web anymore! It is now gonna be a web of people living in fear. You’ll have to be extra careful with your posts and make sure they contain no copyright. Crazy, right?
Well, sadly, even after these protests and stuff, the US Congress remains deaf to the voice of the people and the majority of the Congress are still up for passing the bill. And even if the President (Obama) refuses this bill and vetoes it, the majority of the congress can still override Obama’s power and pass the bill themselves. Thankfully, the bill’s been shelved and voting has been moved from next week to two or three weeks from now. But the fight isn’t over just yet.
The SOPA’s goal is to end piracy. But if this bill passes, it will end up ending liberty as well. So please, don’t support the bill. Protest against it. How?

How Can I Help Fight SOPA?
By joining groups and campaigns that fight against SOPA (I’ve joined three or two so far), and by letting the Internet know how you feel about it, you can help defend the Internet and stop SOPA from passing. I also recommend reading the following links related to SOPA. They won’t only provide more information concerning the bill, but might convince you even more to fight SOPA and defend the Internet.
